Little Person

When she's dressed like this (in regular people clothes and not in "baby" clothes), we just call her the 'little person'.

Confessions of a Goodwill-aholic

A picture says a thousand words...

...I'm not even going to begin to confess how many clothes I got for her. O:-) But it was a 99 cent clothing sale! How can you go wrong!

SNOW!

Snow has arrived in Nebraska --

In fact, in the minutes since I took this picture, it's coming down a lot harder. I suppose it wouldn't seem like such a big deal (it is the end of November after all) except it was about 80 degrees just two days ago!! And it's actually coming down so fast, it's accumulating on the ground & cars! (I told my husband this morning, 'No honey, it won't accumulate, the ground is too warm.' Well I admit - I was wrong!) I need to figure out what winter clothes I need to get for Madison. So far I've had plenty seasonal clothes for her, but I don't think I have much in the way of warm stuff, especially for outdoors.

Our baby sling arrived the end of last week --

We've been trying it off and on, still trying to get the hang of what's comfortable for baby & the person carrying her.

Madison is going on 17 weeks and just had her 4 month checkup today. The doctor said, and I quote, "She looks great." I think every mom likes to hear that from a 'professional'. Her weight - now 13 lb. 3 oz. - has lowered in percentile from last time but her height/length (26 in.) has gone up from 90 to 95%! She seems to be stretching out instead of chunking up as far as babies go. I uploaded a few various 16 week pictures.

Ok, one last picture here that makes me laugh. My husband was being a good hubby & helping wash the dishes. Only he added soap and went into the other room to do something. I walked into the kitchen to see soap suds getting higher & higher in the sink!!

Oh well - at least he's trying to help!

Stuffing Birthday Week

My birthday week is coming to a close (it was last Wed. 11/7) and I just finished the rounds for the last of my free birthday meals. Call it being thrify or cheap or just knowing how to work the system, but I had signed up for the birthday 'club' deals at a whole bunch of restaurants. When my birthday came, I got emails from them with - for most of them - a coupon to get a free meal. You also get a week to use the coupon, which gave me time to get my free meal from each restaurant. Delicious! Ugh, but now I'm so stuffed from all these big meals... Back to eating light the rest of this week!

If you haven't already, be sure to sign yourself & each member of your family up for the following restaurants' birthday deals (and if there are more places I don't know about, pass the tip on to me so I can get signed up there, too!) -- Noodles & Co., Famous Dave's, Red Robin, Caribou Coffee, Coldstone Creamery. Enjoy!

On Veterans Day

Matt has today off so we've enjoyed a nice quiet day here as a family. Madison's tendencies seem to change like flipping a switch rather than gradual. Since this past weekend, instead of fussy she's suddenly increased her wake time and is super smiley & content most of the time. It's great!

She seems to have re-discovered her thumb and we've been catching her sucking it quite frequently the past few days. She may turn into a thumb-sucker after all. She was sucking her thumb in the womb (we had a 3-D ultrasound the day she was born) and it drove her mad the first few weeks of her life that she couldn't coordinate her hand to get it back in her mouth. She hasn't really attempted to find it again over the past couple months, until now.

She's made the next step toward pushing herself up on all fours. Her 'swimming' and wiggling on the floor has progressed to being able to push her back end up on her knees. The problem is when she does this, her arms go straight behind her and her face goes flat into the floor. It's very funny seeing her trying to push herself up in this position. (Hard to see in this picture since her outfit & the blanket she's on are both pink :-P)

C'mon Mama! Give me a break! I look RIDICULOUS in this silly bow you put on my head! I look like a cross between Aunt Jemima & a Christmas gift. Go ahead, laugh - I'm glad YOU think it's funny!!

Tailgating

Today was the last Husker tailgate party at the Governor's Mansion for 2007. It is so hard to believe the whole season has gone by. It was another early one today, but it's always a lot of fun to help out and visit with friends.

Lil' Pilgrim

I've started Madison's historic costume collection - Hooray! I just bought this dress, only hers will be a sea green colored jacket. Madison's Civil War dress in previous pictures was borrowed from her cousin, Natalie. Now, the Pilgrim dress I'm getting for Madison will be too big for her, so she's going to let Natalie borrow it this year!

She Laughed!

Finally! She laughed! She's been sort of laughing for quite a while now -- she has a huge open mouthed smile and kind of goes "HAAA". But last night she giggled. It was sooo cute!! I was grabbing her feet going "Do you have cold toes?" and I guess she found it quite funny.

She's 14 weeks old now, weighs 13 1/2 lbs. She has long legs too - some of the sleepers that fit her in the body aren't long enough in the legs. She's also been less fussy this week -- more pleasant when she's awake. Naps are still short but every once in a while she'll nap for an hour and a half instead of 30 minutes. She's also back to sleeping through the night -- waking at 5:30am however so still not on a perfect schedule. But all things considered, we'll take it!

Thank you for my cute ducky sleeper, Gov. Dave & Miss Sally!!
I've finally grown into it!

Data Disaster

Imagine for a moment you lived in San Diego where all those fires have destroyed homes. If it were you, what would you miss most? Couches and dining room sets and bedroom furniture can all be replaced -- but for me, family photos would be the worst loss. I'd even commented recently that I was glad our photos were all saved electronically so we wouldn't have to worry about such a loss.

Well, the blessing of the computer age can also turn into a curse. This past week we reformatted our computer and, in backing everything up, something went wrong. I realized what a disaster we were facing when I went to add pictures to the Madison folder....... and it wasn't there. Every picture from her first 3 months of life was all gone. I was completely devastated. We immediately began looking into programs that would allow us to retrieve the files from deep within our computer, praying the pictures would not be lost forever. It's slow going and there are thousands of files to go through one at a time. Thankfully, even if we are not able to recover everything, between pictures I've posted online & CDs of pictures I've sent to family, I think we should be able to recompile about 75% of our original collection.

On top of the loss of photos, we also lost any new files we'd created or made changes to since our previous reformat. The worst loss in that category was the address file I'd created. For the past couple years I'd been meaning to sit down & compile a comprehensive database of ALL our addresses instead of having them scattered in different places. I had a database I'd created when we got married, but it hadn't really been updated since then. So in just the past couple weeks I'd been putting all my (very little) spare time into working on our address database. I was specifically doing it to help me get thank you notes out to everyone for the baby gifts we received, noting the gift each person sent & their address - then throwing away the envelope or card to help me clean up. That information is now lost and only the old, very early file with little information is left. All our hundreds of addresses, the whole list of what people gave us -- gone. And that file we probably won't be able to restore.

So, needless to say, between that and the rough week we had with Madison's lack of naps last week, life is a little on the frustrating side right now. I just don't even know where to start to try & rebuild everything. And it feels like such a waste of time, like I'm doing all this backtracking and trying to relive all the work that's already been done.

So, lessons learned, I guess. We'll be backing up, double backing up & triple backing up files in the future. I suppose though some disasters just can't be prevented by even the most well-meaning efforts.

All that said, if you don't hear from us for a long time or if you sent us a gift and don't get a thank you, don't take it personally! We may have lost your address or card and have no way to locate you at present!

Cranky Pants

It's been a long week. Madison has been SO fussy - we call her Miss Cranky Pants for a reason. I think in part it's because she's still not napping well, so she gets overtired & it just builds throughout the day. Plus I think she may have gone through a growth spurt as Tuesday night she woke up 3 times in the night and normally (at least for the past 3 weeks or so), she's been sleeping through the night. I just keep praying she'll return to the cheerful content little girl we were beginning to enjoy!

We've hit a cold snap here, so going on walks requires extra bundling up. It's harder to figure out what to put on a baby when it's chilly -- I need to be sure I have the right clothing to keep her warm as we approach winter. Here's a picture of Madison bundled up yesterday --

The little coat she's wearing was mine when I was a baby. There are a few more 13 week pictures posted here as well.
